St Moritz, 1774 m.

The station in 1993.

St. Moritz is seen and the beginning of the Bernina line. In the same station where the Bernina line begins is also the end of the main line of the Rhaetian railway, where the Bernina line is a part of. Our train leaves towards the southeast from the shores of the lake of St. Moritz. Directly after the station the river Inn is crossed on a nice arched viaduct. The motorway crosses the river on the same location, underneath the railway bridge. This hides the river from our view but it builds a rare situation. The train enters a tunnel underneath the Stazerwald shortly after crossing the river because it was considered unacceptable to take the train through the forest "Stazerwald". Even then (1906) there were environmental activists. This discussion has delayed the construction of the line considerably making the stretch from St. Moritz not to be the first part of the line that was completed.

After the tunnel the ride continues along the slopes underneath the forest edge towards Pontresina. This stretch is very flat and an ideal place for cross country skiing. This is not the most impressive part of the line. Before Pontresina you will pass the station of "Muottas Muragl". From here a cable car leaves for the summit for a great viewing point high above the valley. From the summit you can take a walk down the slope to a chairlift or even all the way to Pontresina.

For a virtual train ride you could start here on Google streetview.
