To make it possible to extend our layout with Brusio and Cavaglia we have built 2 extra modules to serve as an adaption of the landscape. Not only as an adaption in landscape but also as a transition to a standard end-shape used elsewhere inside and outside our club. Cavaglia and Brusio have been built based on the module norms of Fremo and those do not compare to the form of our basis. The Fremo norm is based on modules that have a depth of only 50cm at the end. Much smaller as the rest of our layout. So we has to do our best in order to make a smooth transition.

Above is the complete scheme of our layout including Brusio and Cavaglia. This page is about the green marked modules in the middle.
Please find a picture based report below of the construction of the transition modules.

Waterfall.

On the transition module from Campocologno to Brusio we created a slope with debris, a small stream with a steep incline and waterfalls. The riverbed has been made of pebbles and cat litter. Over that a few layers of glossy acrylic medium were applied. After drying several pieces of thorn white textile were applied. Also the white falling water has been made of this textile. Take a look at the modeling tips for more details (in Dutch).

The rocks above Cavaglia are done

23-Dec-2014
The rock slope above Cavaglia has now been completed.
Maybe an extra path of green or a bush but that will be it.

The rocks above Cavaglia are growing.

15-Feb-2011
With the help of small pieces electrical wires more and more rocks are placed on the slope above Cavaglia. This way you can create an image of how it could fit together before you glue it.

The slope continues.

15-Feb-2011
We didn't like it that the module ended right underneath the rocks. so we made another small extention. The rock face shows itself better now.

Almost adjusted.

29-Jun-2010
The new part has receives almost the same color as the rest of the layout.
Also the first trees made it.

New land in color.

28-Mar-2010
The new extension gets its final color in layers.

New rocks.

24-Nov-2009
The new land gets shape and again with nice rocks.

Entrance to Cavaglia.

25-Aug-2009
Also on this side of the mountain we want to create an impressing rock face that must compare to what we have on the front side.
Also the footpath from Alp Grüm has been planned as you can see in the middle. it descends with serpentines down to the station.

New land almost done.

25-Aug-09.
We are bout ready with the form of the transition module.
A part of Cavaglia and the transition module to Brusio have been attached to adjust the landscape to our new ideas.

New land arises in the other new module.

26-May-09.
With Styrofoam we have created the rough form of the slope.
Where do we place a twist or don't we? ......

Plaster land.

27-Jan-09.
The front most new module has been plastered, that looks very different right away. A few pieces where rocks need to come are left open. The footpath to Campocologno is well visible now.

New land.

09-Dec-08.
The start of making landscape on the new module. The tunnel entrance has been positioned and the riverbed starts to get shape

Transitioning to Fremo size.

21-Oct-08.
On the front we reached the shape of Fremo. Over the length of one meter we adjusted the shape to make a smooth transition from out existing layout to Fremo shape where we can connect to the rest of the club. Temporarily we attached one of the 90 degree modules to make sure that we have the right position of the rails.

Imaging the Landscape.

12-Aug-08
We make a jump in time.
The rails has been laid down and was tested and improved during our club week. We are now busy to create a picture of what shape the landscape should look like. We took a closer look at the model that was created 12 years ago at the start of this project and found some details that could very well make it into this module. In the new module we have put a few wooden sticks and with cardboard we create a a rough form of what the landscape could become. A part of Cavaglia has been attached and the transition looks nice. On the front side the shape of the Fremo end is bothering us, This has, on the lower end. only a height of 5 cm and that is much lower then our river which has its highest point here. We have decided to postpone the transition to the Fremo shape one more module. As you can see on the drawing on the top of this page, there is another module of about one meter to get to Brusio. We now use this length too to adjust the landscape.

The first module is attached to the basis.

12-Feb-08
The transition module fits on the existing layout. Now we can create the the final pieces of underlay for the rails and adjust the slope.

Now, 2011, the shape of this module has changed several times because we didn't like the shape of the landscape, it didn't quite form a nice transition. The Fremo shape came too quickly too low which didn't look good. See further down this page for details.

First module almost finished :-)

23-Jan-08.
The first transition module is qua frame almost done.

On the front left side you can see how the module ends in the Fremo size. from here to the right, the lower level of rails will bring the train 10 cm upwards with a spiral to connect to our original modules.
In the back you see another place where the track will cross this module to connect Cavaglia to this module. This too ends in the Fremo shape.
